Maine's Most Seaward Island

. Comments - What Past Guests Have Said

The following quotes are from a house journals that are left in the houses. People write in them all the time

"We felt very blessed by the Lord this week and found the quiet atmosphere a wonderful respite from life on the mainland." David and Dana

"Beautiful weather and beautiful island--we have fallen in love with the peace and calm. P.S. Lobsters are the best we have ever eaten!!" the Luneaus

"This is probably the best place my husband "the sea lover" could be on Father's Day! Our third day here and the weather has been superb!" John, Debbie, Katelin, and Zachary

"Our last day here and we hate to leave. It's so unusual to find a place where the land still belongs to itself and not to people. Thank you Matinicus for two weeks of freedom." Lynne and David W.

"We did alot of exploring and even convinced one of the island high school boys to take us for a ride around the island in his skiff."

"A beautiful outpost with a wonderful rhythm to match" "I am speechless--what a place!! The best vacation we have had ever. Thanks for letting us in on your secret place." Payson, Avery, Lucia, Michael and Lisa.

"An extremely scenic, beautiful, and untouched island. The island natives have been most gracious."

"All superlatives: great house, great rocks, great storm, great sunshine and blue sea, great walks, beaches, lobster, people, peacefulness. One complaint: must leave tomorrow!" Sue, Janet, and Betsy.

"Being l4 years old, it took a day or so to get used to an island. But I did. Maine isn't exactly my favorite place on earth, but when Monique pulled into the driveway and I saw the rocks and ocean out front, I forgot where I was. Feeding the seagulls out leftovers was fun.Once I counted at least 65 seagulls circling over me. I enjoyed climbing rocks onthe scenic route to Markey's Beach. And the bedroom on the far end of the house is great. At night I opened the window and listened to the waves crash on the rocks. Beautiful sunsets fromt he windows, too. On wet mornings, watch out underfoot for snails. Oh! Before I forget, there is a brown and white rabbit that tends to hang around the yard where the clotheslines are. Leave lettuce or carrots from him." Deven

"I had an awesome time and I really want to come back next year. P.S. We added alot of buoys to your collection!"

"Some things never change, thank god, this is still one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places I've seen in the U.S. outside of Idaho and Oregon." Richard and Robin

"I return because of the simplicity of life and the hypnotic trance the island seems to blanket over me, so rhythmic and fragile. This is a place in the world where nothing else in the world matters. I look up in the sky at night and get carried away." Jody S.

"We all agreed that the one thing we forgot to bring was a tape recorder to capture all the sounds of the island so when back at home we feel the stress of our busy schedules pulling us down, we could simply push a button and close our eyes and once again feel renewed by the call of the gulls, the crashing of the waves, and the reassuring ringing of the bell buoy." Pat

"The island was peaceful and relaxing. Plenty of rocks to walk on. And the beach was the best feature. It was never crowded, which was great. I don't think I've ever played so many card games in all my life. But it was fun. The whole week was worth my stay." Sara, age l6

"Last year it took me two days to unwind from the self imposed stress of work, mortgage payments, and family life. This year it took fifteeen minutes. Words cannot explain my feelings for this masterpiece of nature." Dave

"A beautiful stay. We've had lobsters every night. One of the island boys has let my husband use his boat everday to row over and get the lobster. The people here are friendly. The weather has been fantastic, your view is spectacular--what could be better than this? Thanks for letting us in on your paradise." Mark, Rebecca, Laura and Jason

"I'd like to keep Matinicus as my secret! Thank you for the rocks, smells, puffins, eiders, wildflowers, raspberries, shore dinners, pies, beach roses, starfish, sea urchins, beach peas....thank you again.'" Val

"I just went swimming for the first time, really swimming across the bay of Markey's Beach at eight o'clock p.m. after cleaning up. It's a great big shocking cold, an appropriate end to our week I have enjoyed the horizon, the beach, the birds and my children, niece and nephew, sister and brother-in-law, and my husband very much during this week." Elizabeth

"I am joyful that there are sandy beaches on Matinicus, not rock beaches like on Islesboro that are much too lumpy for me to enjoy sunbathing. I love waking up in the morning in this house and looking out one the clear blue sea on all sides." Jessica

"Sunday night was a once in a lifetime experience. With the stary bright and the aurora dancing across the black sky, the moon floated from the horizon to a brightening sky. Then fireworks exploded above Vinalhaven to compete with nature's show. Then to frost the cake, a large meteor streaked from the big dipper across space disappearing on the eastern horizon." Dave

"In addition to the natural beauty out our window, we've enjoyed getting to know how Matinicus does work and just what makes an islander. Everyone has lots of stories and it is fun to meet the young islanders."

"A typical day would be waking up with the baby, who by the way loves it here, have breakfast and showers and while the baby took her a.m. nap Steve and I would sit out in the sun and take in the rays. After lunch we would explore the island on bikes and see all the gorgeous houses, beaches and paths. What a place! We are so glad we brought our bikes." Steve, Kelly, and Sarah
