Travel to the island can be half the fun!

You will head out to Matinicus by air or sea leaving from Rockland, Maine. Rockland is 1 hr. 40 mins from Portland and is served by US Airways and Concord Trailways Bus Line.

Boat Transportation

Capt. George Tarkleson offers boat service based at Matinicus to/from Rockland. He also offers trips to view puffins, seals and whales. Dr. Tarkleson's boat, Robin, is the quickest over-water transportation to the island. Contact information available at his excellent website:

Capt. Jim Kalloch makes special trips to Matinicus on a boat that carries 22 people for $250 per boatload. He also makes scheduled Saturday trips and can be called anytime at all for a special charter. 207 691-6030 www.penferry.com

The state subsidized ferry makes trips to the island infrequently, typically on three days per month.Call in advance to reserve and visit website to learn the departure times from Rockland. If these trips fit into your schedule, great for you.Fares are low.

Air Transportation Services to Matinicus Island

All Flights leave from Knox County Airport in Owl's Head, just east of Rockland. US Airways links this airport with Boston.

Penobscot Island Air operates with FAA certified high class service. 207-596-7500 or 207-542-4944 (FAX) 207-594-6151.
The service is first rate and very speedy. Penobscot Island Air is the principal provider of transportation on/off the island.

Overnight On The Mainland
If you arrive early in Rockland, we stay at the Trade Winds Motor Lodge 207-596-6661 on the harbor and near the airport. (see link www.tradewindsmaine.com email: twmi@midcoast.com)
Also across the street from the ferry terminal is the Navigator Inn. (see link www.navigatorinn.com) Farther out of town and economical is White Gate Motel 207-594-4625 north on Route 1.

Parking Your Car
There is long term (paid) parking for your vehicle at either the state ferry terminal or at the Knox County airport.
Ferry travelers should arrive at least one hour early to secure parking in the busy state parking lot.

Transportation on the Island

On-Island Taxi Service is spotty. Baggage is sometimes moved by garden cart or delivered by truck separately from passengers, yet it always manages to work out somehow.
