Planning for the trip is half the fun!
The basics of your trip.
Getting there.
You will head out to Matinicus by air or sea leaving from Rockland, Maine. See: Getting to the island. Rockland is 1 hr. 40 mins from Portland and is served by Cape Air and Concord Coach Bus Line.
Overnight on the mainland.
If you arrive to Rockland the night before your trip to the island we suggest staying at the Trade Winds Inn or Rockland Harbor Hotel. Both are located near the harbor and a short drive from Knox County Airport.
Parking your car.
There is long term (paid) parking for your vehicle at either the state ferry terminal or at the Knox County airport. Ferry travelers should arrive at least one hour early to secure parking in the busy state parking lot.
Island taxi concierge.
Updating info for the 2023 season shortly - in previous years we’ve had amazing local services to support summer visitors!
Essential Planning.
Visiting Matinicus requires a sense of adventure and desire to vacation with independence. Guests must bring everything to the island including linens, food and personal belonging. Leave behind a need for instant gratification from material objects.
Provisions.
Currently there is no food store on the island. Definitely bring essential food items and drinking water and then supplement with lobster, baked goods, and the Southend Grocery air delivery service.
