What to do on Matinicus.
Matinicus is a working island with few tourists. The island boasts two fine sand beaches, many more rocky ones and an extensive undeveloped shoreline.
Out and about on the island.
Public facilities include, post office, one room school with modern playground, church with summer services, an island "farmer's market" in July and August with local crafts, an informal snack bar, occasional evening church suppers, and sometimes live rock concerts by local musician Nat Hussey on the pier. Lobster can be ordered by phone and delivered to your door. An island baker produces breads, pies, coffee cakes and other treats. The Fisherman's Wife has gifts, art, and books by summer islander and children's author Gail Gibbons. Everything is old-fashioned and basic. It is a visit to a simpler, perhaps better world.
Cozy days at the cottage.
You don’t have to go outside to enjoy the island. Both cottages have amazing views of the shoreline. Stay inside and relax! The cottages are perfect for reading, watching storms, cooking, baking (come prepared!), playing games, doing puzzles, napping, and enjoying uninterrupted time with family.
Untapped nature.
Don't miss the chance to take a boat trip to Matinicus Rock to view nesting colonies of Atlantic puffins, arctic terns, razorbill auks, and other rare species. Shorebirds and waterfowl are abundant and can be observed effortlessly from the houses. Warblers, buntings, wax wings, and dozens more visit the island early and late in the season during migrations.
